María, rag doll, representation of the Mazahua women, who always walked around with their colorful ribbons in their hair. The dolls are originally from Michoacán and the State of Mexico, created as alternatives to the toys that were sold on the market (usually porcelain dolls from Spain). In previous times they were created from clay, palm and corn hair, although currently they are made from ribbons and cloth. A legend relates that the dolls accompanied minors to protect them from evil spirits during sepulchral rituals. Currently, the creation of these dolls without glue and machinery is encouraged, maintaining their origin of hand embroidery. Our María Mug is not hand-embroidered, but it is hand-painted by artisans.
